Let’s Breathe Easy, Otago – Have Your SayÂ
The way we heat our homes has a big impact on the air we all breathe. In some Otago towns, winter air pollution from home heating is affecting our health and wellbeing – but together, we can change that.Â
The Otago Regional Council has developed a Draft Air Quality Strategy that focuses on practical, supportive solutions to help our communities heat their homes more cleanly and efficiently. Whether it's replacing older burners, choosing the right firewood, or accessing advice and funding, we want to make it easier for households to stay warm while reducing harmful emissions.Â
We’ve seen that real change is possible – and we know that Otago’s unique climate and communities need a local approach. That’s why we’re asking for your input. What would help you or your community switch to cleaner heating? What support or information do you need?Â
This strategy is about working together – supporting each other, protecting our health, and keeping the air in Otago clear for generations to come.Â
👉 Read the strategy and share your thoughts. Your feedback will help shape how we roll this out in the places that need it most.Â

Good air quality is important not only for clean-smelling air and good visibility, but also our health. Otago’s air plan is ten years old and it’s time for ORC to review it.

Ten years ago, the Otago Regional Council developed a plan to manage air quality in Otago. Despite a significant reduction in emissions, the national standards for air quality have not been achieved. This strategy revisits ORC’s approach to ensure that, in time, air quality issues are resolved and air is safe to breathe for everyone, and at any time in Otago.

This Regional Plan: Air for Otago considers the use and management of Otago’s air resource. The Plan provides objectives, policies, rules and other methods of implementation to address the use and management of the air resource. The rules of the Plan determine the status of any particular activity and determine whether a resource consent will be required before that activity can be carried out.

Air quality science monitors the tiny particles in our air that can harm health, particularly in vulnerable groups. Weather influences their dispersion, often peaking during cold, calm conditions.
Exposure to air pollution has multiple negative impacts on health and is well-researched globally. In Otago, our biggest problem is particulate matter, PM10 and PM2.5
