Other Information:

  • Included in the statutory acknowledgement for Te Tauraka Poti (Merton Tidal Arm). An area which was a major mahinga kai for kainga. The wetlands were a rich source of kai, including tuna (eels), black flounder (Rhombosolea retiaria), giant kokopu (Galaxias argenteus) and waterfowl, and were also particularly valued as a spawning ground for whitebait (Galaxias spp.). 19

  • Ellison Saltmarsh is adjacent to the coastal marine area, which is covered by the Regional Plan: Coast for Otago.
