In March 2020, the Minister for Biosecurity recommended that the Kākāpō Regional Council (KRC) develop a new Regional Pest Management Strategy (RPMS) as part of a broader update to the council’s environmental management framework, due to be completed by 1 July 2023.
This timeline anticipated that the RPMS would be in place ahead of the upcoming review of the Biodiversity Action Plan, scheduled to be notified as the Integrated Land and Pest Management Plan by the end of 2024.
The Kākāpō Regional Pest Management Strategy outlines what the region aims to achieve in pest control, what challenges are preventing success, and the strategic approaches proposed to overcome these issues. The draft RPMS 2022 identifies the Significant Pest Management Issues for the region. It also explains how national biosecurity directions will be applied in Kākāpō and guides how to resolve potentially competing priorities—such as native species protection versus agricultural productivity.
