Otago Regional Council and Dunedin City Council have completed the Future Development Strategy which replaces the current Dunedin Spatial Plan and outlines strategic directions for the city’s growth and development for the next 30 years.

The Strategy was developed with significant input from mana whenua, and contributions from key stakeholders including Waka Kotahi and Kāinga Ora.

It plans for the long-term by setting out a vision for how Ōtepoti Dunedin will:

  • achieve well-functioning urban environments in its current and future urban areas
  • provide enough development capacity for housing and business land needs to meet expected demand over the next 30 years
  • help planning decisions made under the Resource Management Act (RMA) work well with infrastructure planning and funding decisions

Next steps

The next step is for the ORC and DCC to prepare an implementation plan, which will detail how the strategy will be delivered.

The strategy will be used to inform the long-term plans and infrastructure strategies for both councils, and the regional land transport plan.
