Climate resilience is an important part of our everyday work and affects everything we do.
We plan and invest in initiatives that reduce emissions and help us adapt to our changing climate, and support others to do the same. Our Climate Strategy 2024-2035 has more information about our adaptation and mitigation actions.
Regional councils are required to consider and respond to climate change, and ORC does this in two main ways:
Protecting people, infrastructure, environments and ecosystems through community-led adaptation programmes, planning, decision-making, engineering and nature-based solutions.
We also support communities to get ready for significant weather events exacerbated by climate change. These are predicted to become more frequent and extreme in future. www.otagocdem.govt.nz
Monitoring and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and supporting others to do the same. Our mitigation work includes providing public transport, transitioning to a fleet of electric buses, preparing an organisational greenhouse gas emissions inventory and developing an emissions reduction plan.
ORC is part of a wider network of people and organisations working on climate change adaptation, mitigation and readiness.
We partner with mana whenua and collaborate with communities, councils and other organisations to protect our region.
As a member of the Ōtepoti Dunedin Zero Carbon Alliance https://www.facebook.com/zerocarbondunedin/ or https://www.dunedin.govt.nz/dunedin-city/climate-change/zero-carbon/zero-carbon-alliance? [ link to ZCA webpage when available ], we find ways to reduce our organisational emissions and collaborate on city-wide emissions reduction. We promote reduction efforts in the city and share successes and good practice.
The Alliance includes the Dunedin City Council, University of Otago, Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand, Dunedin International Airport and Otago Polytechnic.
The Otago Climate Officers’ Group represents all local councils in Otago. It supports regional climate mitigation, adaptation and readiness, and promotes information sharing and collaboration.
