Habitat for nationally or internationally rare or threatened species or communities. Presence of the threatened species Myosurus minimus subsp. novae-zelandiae; a large area of this species surrounds the bare salty area. 1, 8

Scarce in Otago in terms of its ecological or physical character. An extensive community of salt tolerant plants including Atriplex buchananii. Distinctive Lepidoptera and moth fauna associated with salty soils and salt tolerant plants. One of the few saline sites in the region. 1, 8

  • Spring annuals found in the Blackmans Inland Saline Wetland Management Area include Ceratocephalus pungens, Myosotis pygmaea var. minutiflora and Crassula tetramera. 4
  • Halophyte species found in the Blackmans Inland Saline Wetland Management Area include glaucous goosefoot (Chenopodium glaucum), Puccinellia raroflorens (threat status of nationally critical), Puccinellia fasciculate, and Puccinellia stricta. 8
  • Invertebrate species recorded in the Blackmans Inland Saline Wetland Management Area include Capua semiferana, Crocydopora cinigerella, Eudonia sabulosella, Eudonia leptalea, Eurythecta zelaea, Kiwaia thyraula, Loxostege sp. nov., Orocrambus corruptus and Scoparia exilis. 8
  • The Department of Conservation considers the Blackmans Inland Saline Wetland Management Area to be a very important site for biological conservation. On a scale from 1 (highest value) to 11 (lowest value) the site was given a rank of 3, on the basis of its geographical extent, relative representativeness (the extent to which the site represents the assumed 1840 condition), diversity and rarity of biota and soils. 8
  • Potential threats to the wetland include fertiliser application and oversowing. 8
