Regionally significant wetland habitat for waterfowl.  Regionally significant breeding area for waterfowl, including New Zealand Shoveller/Kuruwhengi (Anas rhynchotis variegata), Swamp Hen/Pukeko (Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus), Pied Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) and Spur-winged Plover (Vanellus miles novaehollandiae). 1
