This workshop provides an overview of the Local Government (System Improvements) Amendment Bill. The Bill proposes amendments to the Local Government Act, many signalled a year ago in the Government’s ‘back to basics’ announcements. These include: • Refocusing the purpose of local government, including removing the four well-beings • A requirement to prioritise specified ‘core services’ • New financial performance and reporting measures • Mandatory disclosure of contractor and consultant spending • Stronger transparency and accountability requirements, including a standardised code of conduct and standing orders • Providing regulatory relief to councils Submissions on the Bill close August 27. The workshop will inform a decision on whether ORC will submit or elect not to.
