Dr Ella Lawton was elected on June 22 2017 as the third representative of the Dunstan constituency on the Otago Regional Council.
The by-election, held to fill the vacancy created by the death of Dr Lawton's mother Maggie, saw her receive 7385 votes to Gary Kelliher's 5339.
Dr Lawton will be sworn in at the full council meeting on Wednesday June 28.
The voter turnout was 34.9 percent, with 12,755 votes cast.
Nominations for the above position opened on Monday, 27 March 2017 and closed at noon on Monday, 24 April 2017.
Two nominations - that of Gary Kelliher and Ella Lawton - were received.
An election was held using the first-past-the-post electoral system by postal vote, conducted over the period from 29 May 2017 to 20 June 2017.
The final day for polling was 20 June 2017 at 12 noon.
