Mt Roy between Stoney Creek and Waterfall Creek was identified as at risk during an inspection by ORC Natural Hazards staff. The recent fire has culminated in a large and potentially destabilised area of ash debris and loose soil. With MetService issuing a Severe Weather Watch for Heavy Rain across Otago from 3:00am Thursday 1 February – 7:00am Friday 2 February, ORC’s initial assessment of the situation suggests the area is potentially at risk of muddy flows.
Otago Regional Council and Queenstown Lakes District Council are working with Otago Civil Defence and Emergency Management to monitor the situation which could affect the area beneath Mt Roy down to the Wanaka-Mount Aspiring Road.
At this stage both the ORC and QLDC are taking a precautionary approach, with letters informing residents of the area of the potential hazard being hand-distributed this afternoon.
Further updates will be given via ORC and QLDC social media channels if necessary; to speak to someone if you have immediate concerns please contact the Regional Council on 0800 474 082. In the event of any threat to your property please call 111.
