The group consists of many year 7 and 8 students, and in the past couple of years they've also had some seniors volunteering. Families and friends of the group members have also helped-out. They have visited numerous spots for beach clean-ups such as Tomahawk beach, and Macandrew Bay, but they found the biggest need was along the harbour. So for the last five years they based themselves at the Otago Yacht Club and worked their way along the water's edge. 

Every clean-up the group has managed to fill the boot of a station wagon with rubbish! Unfortunately, last Saturday's clean-up was no different. In amongst the rocks they often find tiny pieces of plastic which have already been broken up, but they know these tiny pieces are just as problematic for sea life. Toxic cigarette butts are another common item that are collected by the group.

Plastic pollution in the ocean is a huge problem, and the group believes that by cleaning up the coastline, they are actively reducing the amount of plastic heading for the sea as its final destination. – Nina O’Callaghan, teacher, Kavanagh College.
