The Otago Regional Council and Queenstown Lakes District Council's joint flood awareness campaign is run in spring to coincide with the time of year where flooding is most likely.
The campaign will involve a walkabout in the ‘flood-prone zone’ of the Queenstown and Wanaka CBDs. Owners and occupiers of flood-prone businesses and households can expect a visit to remind members of the community of what information (including hazard identification) is available to them to help prepare and respond to a potential flood, should Lake Wakatipu or Wanaka (or both) reach high levels.
It is essential that our communities are ready to manage the exposure to flood risk rather than try and avoid or limit these risks through engineered alteration of the physical environment.
